Generalized Hermite beams in free space

Abstract:
The paper shows that the known two types of Hermite-Gaussian light beams, which, when propagating
in space, retain their structure while varying in scale, are a special case of the generalized
Hermite beams. It shows that individual Hermite-Gaussian modes can be generated efficiently by
the phase elements with the transmission equal to the sign function of the corresponding Hermite
polynomial.
